I haven’t felt this bad in a while and I can only attribute my latest fibro flare to my mishap at the dentist’s office on Monday. Having felt bad all day, I decided to take some benadryl to see if that would help. If anything I think it made the situation worse. Then yesterday I had a horrible migraine which I think was triggered by taking my class on a field trip to a 3D IMAX film. Not sure if it was wearing the 3D glasses or I noticed fumes on the bus ride back to the school. I took some ibuprofen and that just increased my stiffness. I can barely walk today. If there is anything that has helped you get through an episode, I am open to suggestions. I’ve tried stretching, walking, a steaming hot bath and nothing is touching the pain. I simply cannot miss another day of work this week.
Just when I thought I was getting the hang of avoiding certain foods and chemicals, I get exposed at a trip to the dentist. I made sure to mention that I had chemical sensitivity and that I did not want a fluoride treatment, but I didn’t think to mention anything else like gluten sensitivity and my food intolerance to cinnamon. After picking my teeth clean, the dental tech moved on to use a cinnamon abrasive to scrub the plaque off of my teeth. I could taste the cinnamon, and told her about my intolerance and she rinsed my mouth out and switched to mint. I don’t think there was enough exposure to do much damage, although my stomach is upset now and I feel a little nauseous. So be advised, the next time you go to the dentist make sure you disclose all of your sensitivities and intolerance! Surprisingly I didn’t get any flack from the dentist about my not wanting a fluoride treatment.
I wish I would have prepared for this in advance. I let my guard down on this one. A dental hygienist that also has Celiac posted this on the Celiac.com forum:
Hello, I’m a Dental Hygienist, and was diagnosed 5 years ago with celiacdisease. I personally call the companies that I order supplies from, and make sure that all my products contain no gluten, unfortunately not everyone can have a hygienist that is empathetic with the agony that we go through as celiacs. My best advise to you, is NOT to avoid the Dentist, or Hygienist, but politely ask that they use flour of pumice and water to polish your teeth instead of their “paste”. It is a standard thing that all dental offices use, and contains absolutely no gluten.1
So it looks like when I go back in April I will be asking for no fluoride treatment and please use flour of pumice and water to polish my teeth. Thank you very much. I just hope I can make it through the day without having too severe of a reaction.
Ever since Easter I haven’t been feeling my best, which is a bummer because I was starting to feel so good. I got the stomach flu before Easter, which was viral because my husband was sick 24 hours after me. I think my recovery was especially slow, because I was glutined around the same time.
When I started feeling back to normal, I went to my first holiday dinner gluten free. It was hard not to eat my mom’s homemade rolls, but she went above and beyond to accommodate my new diet. I overindulged in gluten free sweets, with some candy that may be gluten free but has additives that have possibly caused my fibro to flare.
On the way back from West Virginia we stopped at Wendy’s, which is a gluten free friendly fast food chain where I got the casear salad sans croutons. Everything was going great until 15 minutes after eating my salad my throat started to swell up and I started coughing trying to get my breath. The salad dressing was gluten-free but listed anchovies on the ingredients….maybe another food sensitivity? My allergist tested for this a year ago and I had no reactions at all for my skin test! If it wasn’t the anchovies, what was it?
The weather has been absolutely beautiful here in central Indiana, and I have been doing my best to enjoy it, but I am in quite a lot of pain again. Nature is blooming and my nose is dripping, but I don’t have allergies! The funny thing is taking an antihistamine seems to help with what seem to be allergic reactions I am having, but it makes my fibro pain worse. WHY? I’ve been so sick this school year, that I have used up all my sick time and can not get in to see the allergist until school is out for the summer.
Besides the allergies, I am growing more and more concerned about cross contamination exposure to gluten. In Elizabeth Hasselbeck’s book The G-Free Diet, she says that one small crumb of bread can make a gluten-sensitive individual sick for days. I’m surprised by this, but maybe it is true. My husband’s toast crumbs travel and I make my salad on the same counter. When I am packing up my salad for lunch in the morning what if a crumb lands on it? Is this why I am feeling sick?
Hasselbeck also talks about how she is always washing her hands after preparing food for her family that is not gfree. Today my son had a regular hot dog, cheetos, and a cookie for lunch (not his typical food). I had to touch the hot dog bun to throw it away, cut up his hot dog, and help him get his cookie out of a baggie. Then I snacked on a Larabar. Did I make myself sick?
So my goal for this week is to designate a gluten-free counter in my kitchen and keep it spotless! I wash my hands frequently, but sometimes I don’t think about washing my hands again after preparing my son’s food. There is so much to learn with this new way of living, but hopefully it will be worth it.
I have been spending the past few days researching other foods that might be making me sick. I had such a horrible reaction to pepperoni several days ago that a reader, Joanne Unleashed, thought that maybe it was Monosodium Glutamate (MSG) that was also making me ill. Since going gluten-free this is a flavor enhancer that has made its way out of my diet because I have naturally been eating more fruits and vegetables, and avoiding processed foods.
Livestrong.com seems to confirm that MSG can trigger Fibro flareups. Livestrong also suggests avoiding nightshade vegetables like potatoes and tomatoes, Gluten containing grains, artificial sweeteners and food additives. It also mentions carrageenan as being an ingredient where MSG can hide.
Celebrating Easter, my first holiday gluten-free, was trying as I didn’t get to eat my mom’s homemade rolls. I may have overindulged a bit, and was glutened once, but my recovery has been extremely slow for some reason. The weather is great and I should be feeling so much better.
I’m very glad I came across this Livestrong.com article because I told my husband this morning that I am suspecting my new multivitamin I just started this week as being a culprit in my flare up. When I purchased it I made sure that it was labeled gluten free. After growing frustrated not being able to find a multivitamin in the adult section, I went to the kids vitamins and picked up a chewable tablet. Gluten-free, check!
I am such a dumb-dumb sometimes and this learning curve seems to keep getting steeper. I already cut out artificial sweeteners from my diet over a year ago because I recognized aspartame was leaving a weird taste in my mouth and causing migraines. But guess what this kids vitamin has in it? Both Carrageenan and Sucralose! Ugh. My throat started to swell up this morning after taking my medicines and this is the only change in my meds. I think I’ll just go and bang my head against the wall now.
If anyone has any recommendations on a good gluten-free multivitamin I am all ears. Also, since I may be having a reaction to Carrageenan, I’m now in the market for a fluoride-free, Carrageenan-free toothpaste….uhm maybe I’ll just use good old fashioned baking soda.
