I will openly admit that I am crazy for chocolate. Before going gluten-free I would just crave it by the mouthful. One of the first things I have had to find a gluten-free substitute for has been snack bars. Unfortunately this is a staple in my diet, as I am a working mother that has been a grab a cereal bar and go type. Being a school librarian and teacher I am pulled in 30 different directions all day and am lucky to be able to sit down and eat a snack while at work. The snack bar is my ultimate convenience food.
Being that I am a chocoholic, the first gluten-free variety I have tried was obviously Enjoy Life‘s Cocoa Loco snack bar, which is labeled as soft and chewy. I found it to be neither of those, but a dry chocolate paste with a weird crunchy rice texture. The flavor isn’t bad, but the texture is just funky. After taking one bite, I threw the rest of the bar in the trash and went to see if either of my coworkers that are gluten-free wanted the rest of the box. They said they tried them and disliked them as well.
I give Enjoy Life props for the labeling of their package. It prominently displays, “Nut and Gluten Free” on the top of the box, with a green seal that states the product is allergy friendly. There is also a symbol for Vegan and Certified Gluten-Free in the bottom right corner of the box. I wish other products would label their products in a more obvious manner.
Although I am not a fan of the Cocoa Loco bars, I have grown to like the Boom Choco Boom dark chocolate bars made by the same company. A better alternative to Enjoy Life Cocoa Loco bars are the Envirokidz Crispy Rice bars. These taste much like a rice crispy treat and are available in a few varieties, chocolate, peanut butter, peanut choco drizzle. I am also becoming a fan of Lara Bars, which have a nice fruity flavor with fresh nuts. Also, I have tried a couple of the Think Thin bars, which seem to be pretty tasty. Regardless of which gluten-free snack bar you choose, I am relieved to be finding some snack bars that actually give me energy instead of making me feel sluggish and nauseous.
